History of Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot Temple was built in the 16th century by a powerful Brahman from Java named Danghyang Nirartha, who was tasked to spread Hinduism in Bali. Danghyang Nirartha had chosen this location because it was considered as a very holy place and had a strong spiritual aura.

Based on the legend believed by the Balinese people, this sacred temple began when Dang Hyang Nirartha meditated on a rock that shaped like a parrot on Beraban beach. Apparently, the presence of Dang Hyang Nirartha who meditated on the beach area was contrary to the beliefs of the native at that time.

The beginning of Hinduism in Beraban

By all possible means, the people of Beraban wanted to expel him out from his location of meditation, which at that time was still on the mainland. To prevent a dispute, Dang Hyang Nirartha with his power finally removed the rock where he used to meditate to the sea.

After seeing the Brahmin’s power, the people of Beraban decided to convert to Hinduism and made Tanah Lot Temple as a sacred place. The rock was then named Tanah Lot, which means a rock in the middle of the ocean. Over time, Tanah Lot was guarded by a mysterious sacred snake.
